North Carolina from World Of Warships: Legends

The American Battleship North Carolina

Commissioned in 1941, the North Carolina served as the frontrunner for the U.S. Navy's valued line of fast battleships during the impasse of World War II. Regarded as the first battleship to break away from traditional designs, this vessel marked the birth of a new generation in American naval warfare.

A Departure from Tradition

As opposed to her predecessors, the North Carolina housed a salient improvement in naval engineering—a substantial boost in speed. She was designed to cruise at remarkable speeds, ultimately rendering her an elusive target for enemy combatants. With her advanced propulsion system, the North Carolina could readily keep pace with the new, quicker carriers, giving her a critical role in the Pacific theatre during World War II.

Armor and Armament

Interestingly, the North Carolina featured a noticeably thinner armor belt in comparison to preceding battleships - a departure that led to a misconception of vulnerability. However, what she lacked in vertical protection, the North Carolina exceeded in horizontal armor. This advanced horizontal armor offered a robust defense against plunging shells—shells that descend from a steep angle, a common threat in long-distance naval engagements.

In terms of firepower, the North Carolina boasted a distinguished AA artillery, consisting mostly of dual-purpose weapons. These guns proved incredibly effective at repelling aircraft and concluded North Carolina as one of World War II's most formidable anti-aircraft platforms.

Serving in World War II

Powerful and versatile, the North Carolina played a critical role in the Pacific War between 1942 and 1945. In numerous battles and campaigns such as the Battle of the Eastern Solomons and the Battle of Leyte Gulf, her unparalleled speed and firepower were integral in suppressing and ultimately overcoming Japanese naval forces.

Post-War Legacy

Once the war ended, the North Carolina went on to serve as a memorial, a vivid reminder of the brave men and women who served upon her decks. She even earned 15 battle stars for her service in World War II, making North Carolina one of the most decorated American warships of World War II.

In the world of competitive naval gaming, North Carolina shines brightly as an ode to history, combining challenging gameplay with authentic naval experience. With improved speed, formidable horizontal protection, and superior AA armament, she poses a significant adversary for any who dare challenge her.
